
The plaque in the entrance of the campus was unveiled by the President of the Republic of Guatemala, Álvaro Colom and Minister of Culture and Sports Héctor Leonel Escobedo Ayala, among other government authorities.
The Open Air Theatre "Otto René Castillo" was the venue for the opening of the second phase of the implementation of the Civic Service Act. Otto René Castillo was born in Quetzaltenango in 1936. It was outstanding student at the University of San Carlos where he studied law. Because of its high academic standards obtained a scholarship to study in the GDR. It was revolutionary because of his involvement in the military went into exile on several occasions. He was captured in battle on March 19, 1967 in the Sierra de las Minas. 5 days after he was shot.
Among his awards are the American Poetry Prize, won in 1955, the Independent Award in 1956 and the International Poetry Award in Budapest in 1957.
